When using sign language with your children, the ASL ABC's can be a very useful tool! Many signs are made with the first letter of the word, like the sign for "water". Kids are able to sign the ABC's long before they can write them with pen and paper, and using the manual alphabet will help them gain early reading skills. Check out this link to learn the ASL ABC's!
"Did you know there may be a way to improve your child's reading before he even begins to read? In the past decade there's been a lot of talk about Baby Sign. Teaching babies sign language for communication before they can talk started out as a fad and has grown to be a phenomenon. But if your child is already walking and talking, you haven't missed your chance. The benefits of teaching sign language to preschoolers are just as powerful."
Sign language is a beautiful language, as well as a handy tool for allowing preverbal children to communicate. It is also frequently used by Speech Language Pathologists like this one to empower children with special needs!
Teaching ASL to your children, from babies to preschoolers, can minimize tantrums, and what parent doesn't love that?!? Fellow MSH instructor, Rachel Byerly, recently taught parents and children in her area about how fun and useful ASL can be. Check out this great article to learn more!
